Trump says Iran wants deal as US weighs terms

Donald Trump said on Wednesday that Iran is seeking negotiations with Washington, signaling potential momentum toward a deal as tensions continue in the Gulf.

Speaking at a White House event, Trump said the situation involving Iran was “going very smoothly” and suggested that Tehran is eager to reach an agreement.

“They want to make a deal, they want to negotiate,” he said, adding that U.S. officials are engaging with counterparts who are “very much” interested in striking an accord, though any outcome would depend on whether terms meet Washington’s expectations.

His remarks come as Iran confirmed it is reviewing a new U.S. proposal, following reports that both sides are nearing a preliminary framework aimed at ending the conflict in the Gulf. According to sources familiar with the discussions, the draft proposal could take the form of a short memorandum, potentially deferring more complex issues — including Iran’s nuclear programme — to later negotiations.

The latest diplomatic signals suggest a possible opening for de-escalation, even as both sides remain locked in a fragile standoff over security and control in the strategically vital Gulf region.
