Turkey, Ethiopia discuss strengthening ties and regional issues

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had a phone call to discuss their bilateral relations and global developments, as reported by Türkiye’s Communications Directorate on Saturday.

Erdogan noted that the relationship between Turkey and Ethiopia is growing stronger each day, as stated on X. He emphasized Ankara’s efforts to ease tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia.

Erdogan also addressed the situation in Gaza, condemning Israel’s actions as “genocide.” He highlighted Ethiopia’s support for the Palestinian cause and its role in advancing international peace efforts.

Relations between Ethiopia and Somalia have deteriorated since Ethiopia’s deal with Somaliland on January 1. Türkiye is actively working to mitigate these tensions in the Horn of Africa.

Direct talks between Ethiopia and Somalia’s foreign ministers were held in Ankara in early July, with a second round scheduled for September 2.
