Turkey’s opposition votes in primary as Imamoglu remains jailed

Members of Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) and supporters across the country are casting their votes in a primary election on Sunday to endorse jailed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu as the party’s presidential candidate.

The CHP has opened the vote to non-party members in an effort to galvanize public support after Imamoglu’s arrest on charges of corruption and alleged links to a terrorist group—accusations he denies.

With over 1.5 million registered members, the CHP has set up 5,600 ballot boxes across Turkey’s 81 provinces. Voting will conclude at 1400 GMT.

Turkey’s next presidential election is scheduled for 2028.
