US completes Niger withdrawal amid coup tensions

The US military has announced that it has completed its withdrawal from Niger, following a demand from the country’s coup leaders.

The US had over 1,000 troops in Niger as part of anti-terror missions but the new regime in Niger scrapped a military cooperation deal with Washington after seizing power in a 2023 coup.

The US and Niger announced the completion of the withdrawal on September 15, 2024, stating that it was done safely, orderly, and without complications.

The US withdrawal from Niger marks the end of a decade-long presence in the country, as it grappled with violence from terror groups and Boko Haram.

The new regime in Niger has tilted towards Russia and has tightened relations with Turkey and Iran.
