Crew of capsized oil tanker off Oman still missing, report

The 16-member crew of a Comoros-flagged oil tanker, “Prestige Falcon,” which capsized off Oman, are still missing, the country’s maritime security centre announced on Tuesday. The crew consists of 13 Indian nationals and three Sri Lankans, according to a post on the social media platform X.

The Omani centre informed media that the vessel remains “submerged, inverted” but did not confirm whether it had stabilized or if there were any oil leaks. The tanker was en route to the Yemeni port of Aden and capsized near Oman’s major industrial port of Duqm.

The “Prestige Falcon” is a 117-meter-long oil products tanker built in 2007, typically used for short coastal voyages. Omani authorities have been conducting a search-and-rescue operation at the scene in coordination with maritime authorities, as reported by Oman’s state news agency.

The port of Duqm, located on Oman’s southwest coast, is near significant oil and gas projects, including a major refinery within Duqm’s extensive industrial zone, Oman’s largest economic project.
