Severe flooding in Chad leaves 341 dead and 1.5 million affected

A devastating wave of flooding has swept across Chad, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the floods have affected over 1.5 million people and claimed the lives of at least 341.

The torrential rains have impacted all 23 provinces of the country, causing widespread damage to infrastructure, homes, and agricultural land.

Government data reveals that nearly 164,000 houses have been destroyed, and over 70,000 heads of cattle have been lost.

Additionally, 259,000 hectares of fields have been ruined.

The flooding has been particularly severe in the eastern province of Ouaddai, where a school collapse resulted in the tragic deaths of 14 students and their teacher.

In the northern Tibesti province, at least 54 people have lost their lives due to the floods.

The UN has raised concerns about the ongoing impact of the climate crisis, warning that torrential rains and severe flooding are becoming increasingly common in the region.

The organization has urged immediate action and increased funding to address the climate emergency.
