The World Food Program (WFP) issued a dire warning on Thursday about the escalating food crisis in Sudan, urging the international community to increase funding and provide better access to people at risk of starvation.
WFP Director Cindy McCain said Sudan is a “forgotten crisis” amid a global surge in humanitarian needs.
The ongoing conflict, which erupted in April 2023, has displaced millions and created a dire humanitarian situation.
Despite designating entry points for aid, the WFP is facing challenges reaching vulnerable populations due to the rainy season and damaged infrastructure.
The Zamzam camp, home to over 400,000 displaced people, has been particularly difficult to access, with trucks taking weeks to deliver supplies.
McCain stressed the urgent need for increased funding and improved access to ensure that aid reaches those in need.
She also highlighted the challenges posed by donor fatigue and the organization’s efforts to develop new technologies to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
