Catholic priest’s abduction and killing spark outrage in Nigeria

A Catholic priest, Reverend Father Sylvester Okechukwu, was abducted and killed in Nigeria’s Kaduna state, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) reported Friday.

Okechukwu, serving in Kaura, was taken from his residence earlier in the week by unknown assailants.

CAN’s statement highlighted the escalating insecurity in northern Nigeria, where armed groups routinely target civilians, including religious leaders.

Kaduna, a region plagued by attacks on villagers, schoolchildren, and travelers, has become a focal point of concern.

CAN described the murder as a “heinous crime” that underscores the alarming insecurity and impunity faced by citizens.

The United States Embassy in Nigeria condemned the “horrific act of violence” on X, urging Nigerian authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.

This incident adds to the growing list of security challenges facing Nigeria.
