A Kenyan United Nations peacekeeper was killed Saturday in an ambush in the eastern Central African Republic, a UN spokesperson confirmed.
The soldier was part of a MINUSCA patrol near Tabant village, northwest of Sémio.
Valentine Rugwabiza, the UN envoy, strongly condemned the attack on peacekeepers protecting civilians.
Government spokesperson Maxime Balalu vowed authorities would bring the perpetrators to justice.
Local official Amadou Bi Djobdi identified the A Zande Anikpigbe militia as responsible for the deadly ambush.
He asserted that such anarchy would not be tolerated and the perpetrators would face legal consequences.
The Central African Republic has been embroiled in conflict since 2013, hindering its vast mineral wealth potential.
The A Zande Anikpigbe militia, like others, has reportedly received training from Wagner mercenaries.
Despite this, Wagner’s regional chief previously stated the militia committed atrocities due to isolation, claiming training aimed to integrate them into the national army.
