New leader takes office in Ethiopia’s Tigray region

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the appointment of Lt. Gen. Tadesse Werede as the new head of Tigray’s transitional government on Tuesday.

This leadership change follows the official departure of former interim leader Getachew Reda.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed pledged ongoing cooperation with the new administration.

The decision to appoint Tadesse followed consultations that included the federal constitution and the 2022 Pretoria peace agreement.

Discussions with the diplomatic community also informed the transition.

The prime minister described this transfer of power as peaceful and adhering to legal procedures.

Lt. Gen. Tadesse Werede, who previously served as deputy to Getachew Reda for two years, now assumes leadership.

Tigray continues to navigate a delicate post-conflict period after a devastating two-year war. The 2022 Pretoria peace deal established the current transitional administration.

The conflict between federal forces and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front caused widespread displacement and a severe humanitarian crisis.

Despite the ceasefire, the northern region still faces persistent tensions and political uncertainty.

The new leadership faces the challenge of solidifying peace and stability in Tigray.
