Trump to meet Putin in Alaska amid talk of Ukraine land swap

US President Donald Trump announced Friday he will meet with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in one week in the Great State of Alaska. Trump suggested that an eventual deal between Moscow and Kyiv to end the war could involve swapping territory to the betterment of both.

Tens of thousands of people have been killed since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with millions forced to flee their homes. The highly anticipated meeting between the two leaders is officially scheduled to take place on Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska.

Putin held consultations Friday with the leaders of China and India ahead of the summit with Trump, who has spent months trying to broker a peace breakthrough. The Kremlin did not immediately confirm the date or location for the talks, which follow three failed rounds of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

Russia’s demands in recent negotiations included Kyiv withdrawing from some territory it controls and renouncing Western military support, but no ceasefire was agreed.

Putin has resisted multiple calls from the United States, Europe, and Kyiv for a ceasefire, and he ruled out holding talks with Ukrainian President Zelensky at this stage.

In a separate development, Putin updated Chinese President Xi Jinping on the main results of his recent conversation with US special envoy Steve Witkoff. Xi expressed his firm support for a “long-term” solution to the ongoing conflict and encouraged Russia and the United States to maintain contact.

The meeting would be the first between a sitting US and Russian president since Joe Biden met Vladimir Putin in Geneva back in June 2021. Meanwhile, families with children are being evacuated from 19 more villages in the Donetsk region’s east where Russian forces have been steadily advancing.
