Somali forces kill 100+ terrorists, seize Bariire from al-Shabaab

More than 100 al-Shabaab terrorists were killed, and several captured, after a week-long military offensive in Lower Shabelle. The Somali National Army (SNA), with Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) under the African Union mission, liberated the strategic town of Bariire.

Bariire, located 73 kilometers southwest of Mogadishu, is a key agricultural hub long contested by militants. Defense officials said forces are conducting clearance operations, seizing large amounts of weapons and military supplies in the town and nearby areas.

This victory follows a recent announcement that at least 70 al-Shabaab fighters died in clashes with Somali and AU troops in the same region. The military reported casualties of its own, confirming two soldiers killed and twelve wounded during fighting last Monday.

Al-Shabaab has waged a violent insurgency for over 16 years, consistently targeting government forces, officials, and civilians. The operation marks a significant blow to the group’s control in Lower Shabelle and boosts hopes for stability in the region.

Somalia’s security forces continue their push to reclaim territory and dismantle militant networks threatening peace and development. The joint mission underscores growing cooperation between Somalia and regional partners in the fight against extremism.

Despite recent successes, challenges remain as al-Shabaab adapts tactics and sustains attacks across the country. The liberation of Bariire offers a glimpse of hope amid years of conflict and hardship for the Somali people.
