At least 18 migrants died and more than 90 were rescued after their boat capsized west of Libya’s capital, Tripoli, the local Red Crescent said on Tuesday.
The Red Crescent branch in Sabratha, about 76 km (47 miles) west of Tripoli, said it received an alert late Monday and conducted rescue operations into early Tuesday. The bodies were found on the shoreline near the port of Surman, it added.
Photos posted by the branch showed volunteers lifting bodies into white plastic bags and loading them into ambulances, while other team members rendered first aid to survivors.
Earlier this month, a Health Ministry-run medical center reported at least 61 bodies recovered over two weeks along the coast between Zuwara and Ras Ijdir near the Tunisian border.
Libya has been a major transit point for people fleeing conflict and poverty since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi, with many attempting the Mediterranean crossing to Europe.
