Food aid plane crashes in South Sudan leaving three dead

A plane transporting food aid for the humanitarian organisation Samaritan’s Purse crashed in South Sudan’s Unity State on Tuesday, killing all three crew members, the charity has confirmed.

The aircraft, operated by Nari Air, was carrying around two tonnes of supplies from the capital Juba to communities displaced by severe flooding, according to Bikram Rai, the group’s deputy director in South Sudan.

“Our team has reached the crash site, and it is with deep sadness that I confirm all three crew members have passed away,” Rai said.

The plane went down roughly 20 kilometres outside Leer Airstrip in Unity State’s Leer County, close to the border with Sudan. The crash occurred at around 8 a.m. local time, though further details about the aircraft’s type or model have not yet been released.

Nari Air did not respond to calls seeking comment. The company says on its website that it is based in South Sudan and provides a range of services, including charter flights for cargo and passengers.
