Ousted Guinea-Bissau president Embalo arrives in Brazzaville

Guinea-Bissau’s ousted president Umaro Sissoco Embalo has arrived in the Republic of Congo’s capital, Brazzaville, days after the military seized power, a source close to him said on Saturday.

Soldiers overthrew Embalo’s government on Wednesday before authorities could announce results from weekend presidential and legislative elections, extending a long history of political turmoil in the small Portuguese-speaking West African state.

Embalo initially left the capital Bissau for neighbouring Senegal on a special flight, after military officers installed Major-General Horta Inta-a as transitional president on Thursday.

The source, who requested anonymity, confirmed Embalo’s presence in Brazzaville but gave no further details. News of his arrival was first reported by AFP, citing Congolese government sources.
