Botswana plans Moscow embassy as it boosts investment outreach

Botswana plans to open an embassy in Moscow soon, signalling a new chapter in diplomatic and economic engagement with Russia. The announcement was reported by Russia’s TASS news agency, citing comments from Botswana’s foreign minister on Sunday.

Gaborone has also invited Russian investors to cooperate in developing its rare earths and diamond sectors, key pillars of the national economy. Foreign Minister Phenyo Butale said Botswana offers political stability and economic certainty, urging Russian businesses to view the country as a safe investment destination.

Diamonds remain central to Botswana’s prosperity, contributing roughly one-third of national revenue and most of its foreign exchange earnings. The outreach comes as Russia seeks to expand its presence in Africa amid a deepening confrontation with Western countries.

Economic ties between the two nations have precedent, including Russian mining giant Norilsk Nickel’s past operations on the continent. Norilsk Nickel settled a long-running dispute with Botswana and the BCL Group in 2021 over the sale of its African assets.

Botswana’s diplomatic move reflects a broader strategy to diversify partnerships while positioning itself as a stable gateway for global investment.
