A chauffeur who was driving former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua when a car crash killed two members of his team has appeared in court in south west Nigeria.
Adeniyi Kayode, 46, faces multiple charges, including causing death by dangerous driving, following the collision on 29 December on the Lagos Ibadan expressway. The crash claimed the lives of Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami.
Joshua, who was travelling in the vehicle at the time, was injured in the crash and received hospital treatment before being discharged two days later.
Kayode appeared before a magistrates court in Sagamu, Ogun state, on Tuesday. The hearing was adjourned until 25 February after prosecutors requested additional time to seek legal advice. Kayode did not address the court during the brief session.
He had previously been released on bail set at five million naira. Court officials confirmed he is facing charges related to dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and operating a vehicle without a valid licence.
The crash occurred when the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and his team struck a stationary lorry on the busy highway. Ayodele and Ghami were pronounced dead at the scene, while Joshua, aged 36, was later seen being assisted from the wreckage.
In the days following the incident, Joshua paid tribute to both men on social media, describing them as exceptional individuals and expressing sympathy for their families. He said the loss had been deeply painful, particularly for their parents.
Joshua was travelling to Sagamu, a town where he has family roots, to spend the New Year with relatives when the crash occurred, according to a family member.
The case is expected to resume later this month as prosecutors consider their next legal steps.
