Death toll rises to 70 after SAF hospital strike in East Darfur: WHO

The death toll from a SAF drone strike on a hospital in Sudan’s East Darfur has climbed to 70, including women, children, and medical staff, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Tuesday.

The attack targeted Al Deain Teaching Hospital on March 20, rendering the facility—serving more than 2 million people—completely out of operation.

WHO officials said the toll increased after search-and-rescue teams recovered additional bodies from the rubble. At least 146 people were also injured in the strike.

A spokesperson for the UN human rights office confirmed the attack involved drones and took place in an area under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which is fighting General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) in a war that has raged since April 2023.

Drone warfare has intensified across Sudan in recent months. According to the UN, more than 500 civilians have been killed in such attacks since the start of the year, most of them in the Kordofan region.
