Jub Jub arrested over alleged kidnapping in South Africa

South African television presenter and rapper Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye has been arrested after allegedly kidnapping a taxi driver and firing a gun in his direction during a dispute linked to his girlfriend, police said.

The alleged incident took place on Sunday morning in Edenvale, about 25 kilometres from Johannesburg, shortly after the driver had dropped off a passenger.

According to police, Maarohanye confronted the man at around 7:30 a.m. local time, accusing him of being involved with his girlfriend. He allegedly forced the driver into his vehicle before firing a gun toward him.

The driver was not injured and later managed to escape. Police said he immediately went to a nearby police station to report the incident.

Maarohanye, widely known by his stage name Jub Jub, has not publicly commented on the allegations. He is expected to appear before the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for an initial hearing.

The case adds to a long list of legal troubles for the former music star, who was once among South Africa’s most prominent entertainers.

In 2012, Maarohanye was convicted of murder and attempted murder after four schoolchildren were killed and two others injured during a drag-racing incident. Two years later, the High Court overturned the murder convictions and replaced them with culpable homicide convictions.

In 2023, he was also arrested on charges including rape, attempted murder and assault following allegations made by a former girlfriend. Prosecutors withdrew those charges in 2024, saying there were no reasonable prospects of securing a conviction.

Maarohanye currently hosts Uyajola 9/9, a popular reality television show focused on exposing alleged cheating partners.
