Lavrov arrives in Mozambique on latest stop of Africa tour

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in Mozambique early Thursday as part of a multi-country tour of Africa, following stops in Ethiopia and Niger earlier this week.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Lavrov had landed in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, but did not immediately provide details on his schedule or the length of his visit.

The trip began late Monday in Ethiopia, where Lavrov held talks with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos. He was also received by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Tuesday and met African Union Commission Chair Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.

Lavrov then traveled to Niger on Wednesday, where he attended the second round of ministerial consultations between Russia and the Alliance of Sahel States, a bloc made up of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.

The tour comes as Moscow continues to deepen its political, security and diplomatic engagement across Africa, particularly with governments seeking alternative partnerships outside traditional Western alliances.
