Rwandan football has plunged into fresh turmoil after police arrested federation president Fabrice Shema Ngoga on Tuesday over allegations involving bounced checks.
The arrest comes less than a year after Ngoga was elected unopposed to lead the country’s national football governing body.
People familiar with the federation said the arrest came as little surprise, citing his opaque and highly personalized management style.
During his tenure, Ngoga introduced major changes to executive commissions, national coaching staff and the position of secretary general.
The sudden resignation of AS Kigali vice-president Anne-Lise Alida Kankindi has also raised concerns about growing tensions within Rwanda’s football leadership.
The latest scandal adds to a long-running pattern of instability and corruption allegations surrounding the country’s football administration.
Local observers are now questioning whether ongoing law enforcement investigations could uncover suspected match-fixing in the second division.
Meanwhile, FIFA has yet to publicly comment on the developments, amid longstanding political ties between international football officials and Rwanda’s leadership.
