An Iranian oil tanker has reportedly been hit by US missiles near Kharg Island.
Iranian media reported that four missiles struck the vessel near the island, which is Iran’s main crude oil export hub.
Local sources said there were no casualties. The crew was also being evacuated from the tanker.
However, US authorities have not yet confirmed the reported strike.
Iranian oil tanker hit near key export hub
Kharg Island is one of the most important locations for Iran’s oil industry.
The island handles most of the country’s crude oil exports. Before the current conflict, around 90% of Iran’s crude exports passed through Kharg Island.
As a result, any disruption around the island could have wider consequences for Iranian oil exports.
Iran is also one of the largest oil producers in OPEC.
Kharg Island tensions increase
The reported tanker strike comes amid growing tensions around Kharg Island and the Gulf.
The area has become increasingly important as attacks and military operations disrupt regional shipping.
Iran has previously warned that attacks on Kharg Island would trigger a strong response.
Meanwhile, the Strait of Hormuz remains at the centre of the wider confrontation.
The waterway is one of the world’s most important energy routes. Before the conflict, around one-fifth of global oil and gas supplies passed through it.
Commercial shipping through the area has since been heavily disrupted.
US yet to confirm reported tanker strike
Iranian media have reported the latest attack. However, there has been no immediate confirmation from US Central Command.
Details about damage to the Iranian oil tanker also remain unclear.
The situation could raise further concerns over energy supplies and shipping in the Gulf if the strike is independently confirmed.
