An aid group says Libyan-linked vessels opened fire on a migrant rescue ship in the Mediterranean on Monday, incident reported.
Sea-Watch said its vessel Sea-Watch 5 had just rescued about 90 migrants from overcrowded wooden boat near Libya waters nearby.
Group said approaching vessels fired live ammunition, including single shots and bursts of rounds, and ordered ship stop immediately to halt.
Sea-Watch said crew issued mayday call and alerted Italian and German authorities amid fear for lives on board vessel nearby.
Italian coast guard said it received report, calling it security incident and notifying relevant authorities and Germany flag state officials.
Vessel was later escorted out of area and heading north toward Italian port of Brindisi as safe place designated destination.
Sea-Watch spokesperson called on European governments to intervene, saying attack was carried out by forces legitimised by EU support systems.
EU has agreement with Libya to reduce migrant flows and has provided funding and training for border management since 2015.
Sea-Watch said it rescued all people aboard, while noting rising tensions between NGO vessels and Libyan patrols in region waters.
