Algeria has reportedly acquired Chinese-made HQ-17 short-range air defence systems as it continues to strengthen its air defence network.
Military Watch Magazine reported that the Algerian Air Force had procured the systems. However, neither Algeria nor Chinese manufacturer CASIC has publicly confirmed the reported acquisition.
The HQ-17 is designed to defend military units and important sites against low-flying aerial threats.
Algeria reportedly adds Chinese HQ-17 system
The reported acquisition would expand Algeria’s use of Chinese defence technology.
The HQ-17 is a Chinese development of Russia’s Tor-M1 air defence system.
It combines surveillance, tracking and fire-control radar on a single mobile vehicle. Therefore, individual units can detect and engage targets without always relying on a separate radar vehicle.
The system is designed to counter low-flying aircraft and precision-guided weapons.
HQ-17 can engage targets up to 20km away
According to specifications cited by Military Watch Magazine, the HQ-17 missile can reach speeds of around Mach 3.
It can engage targets at distances of about 1.5 to 20 kilometres. Its reported maximum engagement altitude is around 10 kilometres.
Each launcher carries eight missiles.
The export HQ-17AE variant can also guide four missiles against four targets at the same time, according to manufacturer information cited by Military Watch Magazine.
The system is particularly designed to defend against threats such as cruise missiles.
Algeria operates Chinese and Russian air defence equipment
Algeria has built its air defence network using equipment from both China and Russia.
Military Watch Magazine reports that Chinese systems already used by Algeria include the longer-range HQ-9B and CHL-906 electronic warfare equipment.
Meanwhile, Algeria has also relied heavily on Russian-made air defence systems.
The addition of the HQ-17 would give Algeria another mobile, short-range layer within this wider network.
Such systems can protect military formations, air bases, command centres and other important infrastructure.
