Algeria’s Independent National Election Authority announced a 48.03% voter turnout for the early presidential election held on Saturday.
Election authority head Mohamed Charfi confirmed the preliminary figure in a statement to state television on Sunday.
He also noted that voter participation abroad stood at 19.57%, with voting still in progress in some countries due to time zone differences.
Charfi emphasized that the turnout rate exceeded that of the 2019 presidential election, which saw 39.88% of voters participating.
Official results for the election are expected to be released in the coming days.
To accommodate voters, the election authority extended polling hours on Saturday, allowing voting to continue until 7 p.m. local time.
The election featured incumbent President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Abdelaali Hassani Cherif, leader of the Movement of Society for Peace, and Youcef Aouchiche, the first secretary of the Socialist Forces Front.
Each candidate represented a different faction in Algeria’s political landscape.
The election is a key moment for Algeria, reflecting the country’s political evolution and growing voter engagement.
