Sudan’s fragile peace was shattered on Tuesday as Sudanese military positions in Gedaref, an eastern city previously considered a safe haven, were targeted by drone strikes.
At least three drones believed to belong to the RSF (Rapid Support Forces) carried out the attacks, according to military and security sources.
This sudden escalation marks a significant shift for the region, which had been largely spared the violence plaguing other parts of the country.
The attacks, which also struck locations in Al-Faw, prompted intense anti-aircraft fire from the army and thrust Gedaref into the heart of the conflict.
The eastern region is a crucial hub for delivering humanitarian aid, and the drone strikes raise serious concerns.
With Gedaref no longer a safe haven, aid operations are now at risk, potentially worsening the already dire humanitarian crisis.
Meanwhile, fighting continues in other parts of Sudan, including Al-Jazira state and Darfur.
The year-long conflict has caused thousands of casualties and displaced millions, highlighting the urgent need for a peaceful resolution.
