Authorities in Ivory Coast have taken decisive action against the powerful student federation, Fesci, following allegations of widespread violence and intimidation on university campuses.
Six members of the federation, including its leader, have been arrested in connection with the murder of two students.
The arrests come amidst growing public concern over Fesci’s reign of terror on campuses in Abidjan.
The federation has been accused of controlling student life, extorting money from students, and perpetrating acts of violence.
The recent deaths of two students, Zigui Mars Aubin Deagoue and Khalifa Diomande, have pushed the authorities to act.
Deagoue was found dead after being abducted by individuals identified as Fesci members. Diomande, also a member of Fesci, was killed in August.
Students and faculty members have long complained about the abusive behavior of Fesci members.
Witnesses have described incidents of torture, rape, and extortion. The federation has been accused of using fear and intimidation to maintain its control over campuses.
The arrests of Fesci leaders mark a significant step in the government’s efforts to address the violence and impunity that have plagued Ivory Coast’s universities.
Many hope that these arrests will lead to a more peaceful and secure learning environment for students.
