Botswana’s newly elected President, Duma Boko, has pledged to prioritize the fight against corruption in his administration.
In his inaugural State of the Nation Address, Boko emphasized the importance of safeguarding public resources and holding accountable those involved in corrupt practices.
The 54-year-old lawyer, who led the Umbrella for Democratic Change party to victory in October’s elections, aims to break the 58-year dominance of the Botswana Democratic Party.
His administration has already sworn in a new cabinet, with Ndaba Gaolathe serving as both Vice President and Finance Minister.
Boko has set a 100-day target for transformative change, calling for a dynamic and efficient civil service.
He emphasized the need to prioritize economic and social development, particularly in areas like energy, logistics, and digital infrastructure.
To diversify the economy beyond diamond mining, Boko’s government plans to establish a project development fund and foster a business-friendly environment.
