Burkina Faso seizes record gold haul worth $2.3 million

Burkinabe customs authorities have made a significant seizure, confiscating 28.6 kilograms of gold worth approximately $2.3 million.

Three individuals were arrested in connection with the smuggling attempt, which involved concealing the gold within their clothing.

The gold was being transported by bus from Burkina Faso to neighboring Togo.

The authorities were alerted to the smuggling operation through anonymous intelligence and successfully intercepted the suspects at the border.

This significant seizure highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Burkina Faso in combating illegal gold smuggling.

The country, a major gold producer, has been grappling with security issues and political instability, which have created opportunities for illicit activities.

The government has taken steps to regulate the gold mining sector, including suspending exports from artisanal mines and establishing a new gold refinery.

These measures are aimed at increasing state revenue and reducing the potential for illicit trade.
