At least six people, including two minors, lost their lives on Thursday when a tourist submarine sank off Egypt’s Red Sea coast.
The vessel, carrying 45 Russian tourists, was on an underwater excursion near the resort town of Hurghada, popular for its coral reefs and diving activities.
The incident occurred around 10:00 AM local time, about one kilometer from shore. Initial reports indicate that the submarine crashed during the tour.
While the majority of those aboard were rescued, 29 survivors, including nine injured, were taken to nearby hospitals and hotels.
Russian state news agencies reported that five foreigners, including the minors, and one Egyptian were confirmed dead.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, with the vessel’s owner, Sindbad Submarines, confirming the submarine’s capacity was 44 passengers and a depth limit of 25 meters.
The incident adds to a string of deadly accidents in the region, which is a major tourist destination.
Last November, a dive boat capsized near Marsa Alam, killing four people.
Earlier, in June 2023, a boat carrying French tourists sank, though all were evacuated safely.
Hurghada’s airport, which receives over nine million visitors annually, is a central hub for Egypt’s tourism sector, contributing significantly to the national economy.
Despite several recent accidents, the region remains a top destination for diving and underwater adventures.
Egyptian authorities have launched investigations, while the Russian consulate has sent diplomats to assist in the aftermath.
