Fuel truck explosion in Nigeria: Death toll reaches 98

The death toll from a devastating fuel truck explosion in northern Nigeria has tragically risen to 98, with authorities recovering additional bodies from the wreckage on Monday.

The accident occurred on Saturday in Dikko, Niger State, when a petrol truck overturned and exploded, engulfing those who had gathered to collect fuel from the wreckage.

Abdullahi Baba-Ara, director-general of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, confirmed the updated death toll, stating that 69 injured individuals are currently receiving medical treatment.

This incident marks one of the deadliest fuel truck explosions in Nigeria’s history. In October 2024, a similar incident in Jigawa state resulted in the tragic loss of 147 lives.

These tragic events underscore the significant challenges faced by Nigeria, including a severe cost of living crisis exacerbated by the removal of fuel subsidies.
