At least seven people were killed in a shootout between Ghanaian soldiers and a group of individuals described as “illegal miners” at the Obuasi gold mine in the Ashanti region.
The incident occurred on Saturday night when a large group of armed miners attempted to forcibly enter the mine. The military, deployed to secure the site, responded to the attack, resulting in the deaths of seven miners and the injury of one.
President John Dramani Mahama expressed deep regret over the loss of life and ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
He also directed AngloGold Ashanti, the company that owns the mine, to cover the medical expenses of the injured and the burial costs of the deceased.
AngloGold Ashanti confirmed the incident, stating that the company’s security personnel were forced to defend against an attack by a large group of armed illegal miners seeking unauthorized access to the mine.
Illegal gold mining, known locally as “galamsey,” has been a significant issue in Ghana, causing environmental damage and posing security challenges.
The government has taken steps to address this issue, but illegal mining activities persist.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Ghana in combating illegal mining activities while ensuring the safety and security of its citizens.
