A member of parliament from Ghana has issued an apology to English footballer Harry Maguire after drawing a comparison between Maguire and the country’s vice-president, characterizing both as underachievers.
Last year, the MP had censured Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia for Ghana’s economic downturn and drew a parallel between Bawumia’s alleged poor performance and what he claimed was Harry Maguire’s own-goal scoring record as a player.
However, on Tuesday, MP Isaac Adongo mentioned that the fortunes of Manchester United defender had evidently improved since then.
“Mr Speaker, I now apologise to Harry Maguire. Today, Harry Maguire has turned the corner and he is a transformational footballer,” he said in parliament during a budget debate.
He expressed his criticism of Mr. Bawumia’s role as the vice-president and head of Ghana’s Economic Management Team, highlighting that it had led to increased national debt and jeopardized the country’s economic performance.
[Harry Maguire] is now a key player for Manchester but as for our Maguire [Mr Bawumia] he is now roaming at the IMF with a cup in hand,” he said.
At present, Ghana is facing its most severe economic crisis in a generation.
Last year, the inflation rate hit a record high of 54% – and is still running at more than 35%.
