Gunmen kill 20 and steal cattle in central Nigeria village attack

Gunmen killed 20 people and stole cattle in a violent raid on a central Nigerian village, authorities reported Saturday.

The attack unfolded in Plateau state on Friday, when armed men ambushed soldiers conducting a routine security patrol.

Twelve security personnel and eight community defenders died in the ensuing firefight, highlighting the grave risks facing local protection efforts.

After the clash, the gunmen stormed a nearby settlement, looting property and seizing livestock, deepening local communities’ ongoing hardships.

“The region’s villages face repeated attacks and kidnappings, leaving residents in constant fear and insecurity,” said the Kanam Development Association.

Locals commonly refer to these armed groups as “bandits,” who often kidnap for ransom and raid rural communities across Nigeria.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, simultaneously battles an Islamist insurgency, stretching military resources and complicating regional security operations.

Efforts by the Nigerian army to counter escalating violence are hindered by the simultaneous activity of multiple armed groups.

Residents describe life under threat as perilous, with communities struggling to recover from repeated raids and violent disruptions.

The Plateau attack underscores persistent challenges in safeguarding rural areas, where law enforcement and local defenders face overwhelming risks.

Authorities have yet to announce any arrests or immediate measures to prevent further violence in the affected villages.

The latest raid reflects a broader pattern of insecurity across central Nigeria, threatening livelihoods, safety, and the fragile local economy.
