ICRC condemns attacks on civilian infrastructure in Sudan

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has issued a stark warning about the escalating attacks on critical civilian infrastructure in Sudan, severely disrupting access to essential services for millions of people.

Since the outbreak of the conflict between general Abdel Fattah al Burhan-controlled SAF and the Rapid Support Forces in April 2023, the country has witnessed a devastating impact on vital infrastructure, including power plants, water stations, and dams.

Dorsa Nazemi-Salman, head of ICRC operations in Sudan, expressed deep concern over this trend, stating, “We are witnessing a disturbing pattern of attacks on critical civilian infrastructure so essential for people’s survival.”

The ICRC emphasized that disruptions to electricity and water supply have severe repercussions, undermining public health and increasing the risk of disease outbreaks.

The organization called upon all parties to the conflict to abide by international humanitarian law and protect critical civilian infrastructure.

This latest warning highlights the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan and the urgent need for a cessation of hostilities to protect civilians and prevent further damage to essential infrastructure.
