Kenya military investigates alleged meth theft by own personnel

Kenya’s military announced on Tuesday that it has launched an investigation into several Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) personnel accused of attempting to steal and conceal part of a major methamphetamine shipment intercepted off the country’s coast.

The allegations relate to a 1,024kg crystal meth cargo seized on October 25, when a dhow was intercepted at sea and the narcotics were offloaded under heavy security. The claims emerged shortly after the operation, prompting an internal review by the KDF.

In a statement, the military said the “suspected KDF personnel are currently under investigation” and confirmed that “if the allegations are verified, appropriate disciplinary and legal actions will follow in line with the law.” The case comes as courts in Mombasa continue hearing related proceedings. Six foreign nationals arrested during the operation have been arraigned over trafficking “769 packages containing crystalline methamphetamine” valued at approximately $63 million, according to prosecutors.

Kenya has stepped up maritime surveillance in recent months after several high-value drug interceptions along the Indian Ocean route, which authorities say remains a major corridor for transnational trafficking networks.
