Kenyan cult leader found guilty of illegal filming

Paul Mackenzie, the Kenyan man accused of heading a cult and allegedly causing the deaths of over 400 people, has been convicted on unrelated charges.

In the coastal town of Malindi, a court has found him guilty of unlawfully operating a film studio linked to his preaching activities and distributing films without a valid filming license.

Several of his sermons remain accessible on the internet.

The magistrate, however, cleared him of the charge of inciting children to abstain from attending school.

Mackenzie may be subject to a prison term of up to five years or a monetary fine. Sentencing is set for the following month.

Despite being in custody since April, Mackenzie has not been formally charged in connection to the deaths of hundreds of his purported followers.

The revelation of bodies found in shallow graves in a forest startled Kenya earlier this year.
