Kenyan special forces killed five al-Shabaab fighters and injured several others during an operation in the eastern Boni Forest, the KDF said Tuesday. The troops discovered and “neutralized” a makeshift camp in the Lacta Mangai area while conducting an intelligence-led patrol, the statement added. Security forces seized AK-47 rifles, RPG launchers with warheads, ammunition, solar panels, tents, and materials used to make improvised explosive devices.
The KDF highlighted that Operation Amani Boni remains committed to restoring lasting peace and security in the volatile Boni region. The multi-agency mission focuses on countering al-Shabaab and improving safety in Lamu County and surrounding areas near the Kenya-Somalia border.
Al-Shabaab has waged a brutal insurgency against the Somali government for more than 16 years, often targeting security forces and civilians alike. Kenya’s military operations in the Boni Forest continue to strike at the heart of al-Shabaab’s regional networks, disrupting their plans and supplies.
Officials emphasised that persistent vigilance and intelligence-led operations are critical to maintaining security along Kenya’s porous border with Somalia. The operation reflects Kenya’s ongoing determination to protect local communities while dismantling extremist threats in one of the country’s most dangerous forests.
