Libya’s UN mission moves forward with electoral solutions plan

The UN Mission in Libya announced its advisory committee has concluded discussions.

They finalized a set of options to tackle key disputes within Libya’s electoral structure. The Mission will now engage Libyan parties using these proposals.

Formed in February by UNSMIL, the committee aimed to find solutions. Their goal is to enable the long-awaited national elections.

The Mission stated these options will significantly aid reaching political consensus. This is crucial for holding elections and unifying divided state institutions.

Such steps are vital to end Libya’s prolonged divisions and transitional instability.

Libya’s political process has been stalled since the planned December 2021 elections failed. Disagreements over candidate eligibility were a major obstacle.

The nation has endured conflict since the 2011 uprising. It fractured in 2014, resulting in rival administrations in the east and west.

The Tripoli-based Government of National Unity, led by Prime Minister Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah, was established in 2021 through a UN process.

However, the Benghazi-based House of Representatives no longer recognizes its legitimacy. Many Libyans are skeptical of their leaders’ commitment.

They suspect a reluctance to hold elections that could displace them from power.
