Military won’t take part in politics in the future: Sudan’s army chief

Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council Chairman and General Commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, declared that the Sudanese army will not participate in future political processes or interfere with the country’s independent transitional government.

Al-Burhan made the remarks during a meeting with the Swiss Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Sylvain Astier, in Port Sudan, the capital city of the Red Sea State in eastern Sudan, as per the Sovereign Council’s statement.

The meeting addressed internal and external efforts aimed at ending the war in Sudan, alongside humanitarian conditions and ways to facilitate aid delivery to those in need.

The meeting also discussed the importance of forming a government of independents to manage the transitional phase and pave the way for general elections.

The conflict between the Sudanese army and RSF began on April 15 due to tensions related to a proposed transition to civilian rule. After approximately six months of fighting, the United Nations estimates that around 9,000 people have lost their lives, and an additional 5.6 million individuals have fled their homes.
