MTN Group, Africa’s largest mobile operator, announced on Monday a strategic partnership with UK-based video software company Synamedia to create a new streaming platform aimed at mobile and fibre subscribers across the continent.
Founded in 1994, MTN has evolved from a traditional mobile network provider into a technology-driven media company, offering services that include fintech, digital, and entertainment, as demand for voice services declines.
“We see a unique opportunity to transform video consumption in Africa with high-quality, accessible, and relevant content,” said Selorm Adadevoh, Group Chief Commercial Officer of MTN Group.
With a customer base of 291 million across 16 African countries, MTN aims to capitalize on the continent’s rapid smartphone adoption and improved telecommunications infrastructure, both of which have increased demand for video streaming services.
The new platform will use Synamedia’s cloud-based technology to offer a combination of linear TV and on-demand video content. The partnership also plans to offer diverse monetization models, including subscription-based services, ad-supported content, and free streaming channels with targeted ads.
The platform will tailor content strategies to each market, ensuring relevance to local cultures, languages, and viewing habits.
MTN and Synamedia will enter a competitive streaming market that includes MultiChoice’s Showmax, as well as global giants like Netflix, Disney, Amazon Prime, and Apple TV.
