Nigeria: 64 kidnapped children and women released

In Nigeria’s Zamfara state, 64 children and women, who were kidnapped by armed gang members, have been released.

Suleiman Bala, the spokesperson for Zamfara State, stated that the military, deployed to the state, conducted intensive operations against the armed gang members.

Bala noted that as a result of the military operations in the region, 64 children and women abducted by their captors were released.

Bala highlighted that the significant deployment of troops to Zamfara state “changed the course,” stating, “This strategy put pressure on the armed gang members, forcing them to flee to neighboring countries and release the captives they held.”

Nigeria has recently faced attacks not only from armed gangs but also from Boko Haram and ISWAP in different regions of the country.

Despite the punishment for kidnapping being the death penalty in the country, kidnapping for ransom is still common.

Armed individuals often target villages, schools, and travelers in the northern part of the country, demanding ransom.”
