Nigeria’s law enforcement is undergoing significant reforms under governmental authorities.
Nigeria’s minister has announced plans to adhere to a presidential directive by withdrawing police officers from VIP security responsibilities.
Hajia Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the State Minister of Police Affairs, highlighted that the police force is grappling with challenges due to prolonged neglect over the years, significantly hindering its capacity to carry out its constitutional duties.
She emphasized that to achieve the President’s vision of a revitalized and highly efficient force, the police must undergo an evolution in its operational methods.
She urged the police to lead the effort in revising its training institutions, aiming to align them with the changing dynamics of law enforcement, integrating modern practices and international benchmarks.
She addressed the police cadres during a two-day retreat held in the capital city of Abuja.
She mentioned that the ministry held significant responsibilities, including the development and implementation of a unified police reform report, amending the police act, executing the President’s directive on withdrawing police personnel from VIP security duties, and formulating a community policing strategy.
She described the mandates as “transformative initiatives” directed towards improving internal security within Nigeria.
