Nigeria’s military says it has killed at least 40 Boko Haram fighters during air operations carried out over two days in the country’s northeast, as the campaign against the armed group continues in Borno state.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Nigerian Air Force, the strikes were conducted on Thursday and Friday and targeted suspected Boko Haram positions in the region.
The military said dozens of fighters were killed during the operations, while others were wounded. No details were provided on civilian casualties or damage on the ground.
Nigeria has been battling Boko Haram and allied groups since 2009, a conflict that has left tens of thousands dead and forced millions from their homes. The violence has also spilled into neighbouring Cameroon, Chad and Niger, fuelling a wider regional security crisis.
