OIC calls for international aid to flood-affected West Africa

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has expressed its solidarity with several West African nations grappling with devastating floods.

Countries like Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Chad have been severely impacted by the torrential rains that have swept through the region since mid-August.

OIC Secretary-General Hissen Brahim Taha called on member states and international partners to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to the affected countries.

He commended the efforts of the governments in responding to the crisis, but emphasized the need for greater support.

The floods have resulted in a tragic loss of life and widespread displacement.

Humanitarian organization CARE International reported that in Niger alone, the floods have claimed 217 lives, injured 200 others, and forced over 350,000 people from their homes.

The impact on livelihoods and food security is expected to be severe, as the floods have destroyed crops, livestock, and infrastructure.

Nigeria has also been hit hard, with floods wreaking havoc in the northwestern state of Jigawa. Heavy rainfall has caused flooding, destroyed homes and farmland, and claimed lives.

The government has declared a national disaster in Mali, where floods have affected tens of thousands of people and caused at least 30 deaths.

As the region continues to grapple with the aftermath of the floods, the OIC’s call for international solidarity highlights the urgent need for assistance to help these affected nations recover and rebuild.
