Terrorist groups in Borno, including Boko Haram and the West African branch of ISIS, ISWAP, regularly carry out intense attacks.

Since the early 2000s in Nigeria, Boko Haram has been involved in mass violence that has claimed tens of thousands of lives since 2009.

Since 2015, the organization has also carried out attacks in Cameroon, Chad, and Niger, neighboring countries of Nigeria.
