Somalia has expressed unwavering support for South Sudan following escalating political tensions, according to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
In a statement on Sunday, Mohamud emphasized Somalia’s commitment to a peaceful and stable future for South Sudan, urging both dialogue and cooperation.
The statement followed a phone call between Mohamud, South Sudanese President Salva Kiir, and Vice President Riek Machar.
During the conversation, Mohamud reiterated Somalia’s “deep concern” over the arrest of opposition leaders and military figures linked to Machar.
He stressed the importance of regional efforts to prevent further conflict.
“South Sudan’s stability is crucial for the peace and security of the entire region,” Mohamud said, highlighting ongoing regional talks aimed at supporting South Sudan’s prosperity.
Tensions in South Sudan escalated earlier this month when government forces detained two ministers and several senior officials aligned with Machar.
The arrests followed violent clashes between national forces and the White Army militia in Nasir, a group linked to Machar’s ethnic Nuer community.
Machar’s faction has denied allegations of collaboration with the militia.
Additionally, a UN helicopter was shot down during an evacuation mission in Nasir, killing a crew member and several soldiers.
The attack has further exacerbated the volatile situation.
South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation, has faced persistent unrest since its 2013 civil war.
Despite a 2018 peace deal, key reforms, including disarmament and election preparations, remain stalled.
