South Africa unity govt faces strain over land reform bill

The unity government in South Africa is facing growing tensions, with the Democratic Alliance (DA) threatening to withdraw its support over the recent signing of a controversial land reform bill.

The bill, which allows for the expropriation of land without compensation in certain circumstances, has been strongly opposed by the DA, a key partner in the governing coalition.

DA leader John Steenhuisen warned that the party would not tolerate unilateral decisions that could harm the economy and vowed to consider withdrawing its support from the government if its concerns are not addressed.

The land reform issue remains highly sensitive in South Africa, where the legacy of apartheid continues to cast a long shadow. The DA fears that the new legislation could lead to arbitrary land seizures and negatively impact economic growth.

While the government maintains that the bill includes safeguards to prevent arbitrary expropriations, the DA remains unconvinced.

This latest dispute highlights the fragility of the unity government and raises concerns about potential political instability in the country.
