South African firefighters tackle wildfire for a third day

A challenging wildfire continues to rage in Cape Town, South Africa, persisting for three days since its ignition, as firefighters confront the blaze exacerbated by strong winds.

The fire erupted early on Tuesday atop a mountain near Simon’s Town, approximately 40 kilometers (24 miles) south of Cape Town, rapidly spreading due to intense winds.

Simon Liell-Cock, a local councillor, informed Cape Talk radio station that throughout Wednesday night, nineteen fire engines along with multiple crews tirelessly worked to contain the inferno. Helicopter operations recommenced early Thursday, employing water from the ocean to douse the flames.

According to Mr. Liell-Cock, the firefighting teams are tackling several distinct fires around the mountain.

Jermaine Carelse, the emergency services spokesperson for the City of Cape Town, stated in an update on X that “out of control” wind conditions have complicated the response efforts, further intensifying the battle against the wildfire.

The situation remains challenging as firefighters grapple with the persistent blaze, struggling against the forceful winds that continue to hamper their containment efforts.
