South Sudan vs. Sudan match: Symbol of peace, says official

South Sudan and Sudan are gearing up for a World Cup qualifier that carries profound symbolism for regional peace, an official asserts. Tut Gatluak, security advisor to President Salva Kiir, stressed the match’s significance during his inspection of Juba National Stadium ahead of the June 11 fixture.

Gatluak likened the match to children playing, representing hope amid conflict-ridden times. He underscored how the Sudanese conflict has affected all facets of life, including sports, making this match a testament to the commitment to peace and stability.

In preparation, Gatluak announced financial incentives for the South Sudan team: $1,000 per player, with an additional $10,000 for a win.

South Sudan’s Bright Stars have had mixed results in the fourth round, drawing with Mauritania and Togo while losing to Senegal. Gatluak, representing President Kiir, aims to boost team morale and inaugurate the newly completed national stadium, funded with $5 million from FIFA after a three-year delay.

The stadium will host matches between Sudan and South Sudan, both in Group B of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers, alongside Senegal, Togo, and Mauritania. South Sudan is currently fifth in the group, while Sudan holds the second position with seven points.
